Entry tags:christmas, presents

So, DK and I are doing "Christmas for $10!" this year. :D I might have one over on her, since I've had a lot of Christmases were I was BROKE and got creative to avoid spending money. >.>

But it has made me think about all the creative gifts I've given and gotten over the years. Here are some. *grins*

Bryant made music CDs one year, of Canadian music. Those were fun. I still listen to mine... :D
Marste knitted me an awesome scarf, with a fun shawl, too. :D
We've made pajamas and T-shirts for each other (we all did PJs, Marste did T-shirts). There were bead-bracelets another year. :D
I made a book of coupons for my parents, with stuff like 'do the dishes' and 'make dinner' for my mom, and 'go get coffee' and 'have a head rub' for my dad. Which sounds weirdly unbalanced, but those are the things they'd appreciate. *laughs*
My mom used to sew shirts for my Grandpa and Uncle Mark, and occasionally things for us, too.
Last year, Chelsea got a friend of hers who's really good at photography to take pictures of my dogs, and she framed them and it's awesome. :D
Marste used to copy movies for me, back when we could copy them off VCRs. *laughs* I have so many happily copied movies. :D
I made Superhero CDs one year, with all the superhero songs I could find. *grins*
Marste got her artist friend to give me art lessons one Christmas, which was awesome.

Hmmm... nothing else comes to mind off the top. This year, I have presents for DK. Several, actually. >.> Two of them are just kinda fun, and I'm not even sure if she'll like one of them, but the other one has become A Project, and it's AWESOME. I'll tell you all about it after Christmas. ;-D

Now I just have to think of presents for the rest of my family. >.>

What about you guys? Any creative presents over the years? ;-D

Even if I buy presents I often make home made things as well. Most of the time, as I am somewhat of a foodie, they have to do with food.

A couple of years ago, I made several hand made spice assortments and tags for how to use them. I packaged them together in cute litte baggies and gave them out as gifts. They were very popular.

I have also made cinnamon-apple air fresheners (you make a cinnamon apple dough and cut it out and dry it...smells really really really good).

I make various candies and cookies and stuff. Before I managed to hurt my shoulder very badly and I had access to a commercial oven, I would often bake 5,000 - 10,000 cookies to give out to people around Christmas time.

I have also done photocollages.

Along the same vein, I have created custom notecards and stationary for people.

Please share when you come up with something. I'm in the same boat, only not voluntarily. (It's times like these when I wonder what it's like to have money.)

My sister loves hanging towels, so I'm making her these little towels that looks like dresses. http://www.aokcorral.com/hangingkitchentowel.htm

I don't have a clue what to do for the rest of the family, especially the guys. And they're all rich, just to add to the fun. :P

I feel compelled to remind you that on a fairly recent Christmas, you gave me a picture of myself, at about age 7, standing in front of Dopey at Disneyland. And you made a little mat/frame for it (since the photo frame itself was a frame-less one, if that makes sense), painted with little flowers and vines. And at the bottom you wrote, "Today is a day for MARSTES!!"

One of the best presents ever, right there. It sits by my bed. :)

Love,
Marste

Homemade liquers go over well. Mindy, for example, is getting a girlie night set; martini glass, creme de cacao, frangelico, maybe kahlua and sugar candy to rim the glass with.

Flax/rice bags that you heat up in the microwave.

Obviously, preserves, which is what I'm doing this year. Jams, chutney, apple butter. Or! Spice mixes. Powdered drink mixes (chai tea, with spices, instant tea and instant milk, or hot chocolate). Cookies in a jar (just add milk and eggs).

Marble magnets.

...I have more work to do, I'll come back to this.

I think my most successful creative present was when I wrote a Christmas-themed short story for my grandmother, a former newspaper reporter who'd always encouraged me in writing and reading. She loved the story--and even applauded when I then turned around and sold it for $250 to a children's magazine. XDDD

This year I actually decided to make gifts for people, so I made butterfly decorations using seashells, wire and stones. I think they turned out decent ^^

I love to make presents myself but unfortunately 8 times out of 10 I haven't finished the project when Christmas or the birthday arrives. *facepalm* Thankfully my family and friends are patient with me.

Originally I planed to make an audio book for my parents but as it took ages to find a good book, which both will like, this will be the present for next Christmas. What they will get instead I have no idea currently.

A good friend will get a shawl, which is not started though because she plans to buy a new coat in the near future but doesn't have any idea about the color. (For once it will be not my fault if the present is late. YAY!)

Some relatives will get self-made cookies.

And for the rest I'm still planing. :)

I haven't taken the creative approach too often... but this year I'm making a computer book for my mum. She got a laptop last Christmas and has called me a few times with questions, the books you can buy just don't seem to cater to what she really needs... so I'm going to make her one. Stuff we take for granted that she could benefit from!
