Cake
Wednesday Night
Tim looked through the binoculars. Nothing was happening. He put them down with a sigh, and shifted to a more comfortable position on the roof.
His stomach growled. "I would kill for a sandwich," he muttered. He tilted his head to see the dark form above him, crouched on a gargoyle. "I skipped lunch and forgot dinner."
Batgirl looked down at him. It seemed she was smiling behind her mask. "Want food?" she asked.
Tim perked up. "You have food?"
She unhooked one of the big, boxy pouches on her belt and pulled out half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, sealed in a little baggy.
"You're brilliant," Tim said, taking it from her and opening it. "But aren't those pouches supposed to be for Bat-equipment?"
She just shrugged.
Tim smiled and bit into his sandwich. It was smooshed and the jelly had gone a little hard, but it was food. "Maybe I should start carrying food in my pouches," he muttered, glancing at his belt. His pouches were much smaller than hers, though. He wasn't sure much would fit. Besides, he actually used them.
Batgirl settled in, opened another pouch, and pulled out a baggy that was smeared a dark brown.
Tim kept eating. Then the smell of cake caught his attention. He looked around. Then up, at Batgirl.
She was eating *cake.*
"Cass?" Tim said, eyes wide. "Are you actually eating what I think you're eating?"
She smiled broadly--the bottom of the mask was pulled up to expose her mouth--and grinned. There was frosting in the corners of her lips.
"You put *cake* in your pouches," Tim said, not sure whether he was in awe or horrified.
She nodded happily.
"Doesn't it, I don't know, melt?"
She nodded and shrugged.
"And get smashed?"
She nodded again.
"And don't your fingers get all goopy? Or do you have a fork in there, too?"
"No fork." She proceeded to lick one hand clean. The other was holding the smashed cake.
He looked back down at his sandwich. Then up at the cake. Then down at his sandwich. Then up at the cake. "Cass?" he asked slowly.
She just looked at him.
"Do you have any more?"
